August 30, 2018 News Update

School is back in full-swing for the 2018-19 school year. We have kicked things off with a new slogan of "L&M Positive." This year we will focus on complaining less & finding the positivity in all that we do. Join in the movement by using the hashtag #LMPositive on social media to showcase the awesome things our students, staff, athletes, and community members are doing!

Do you have a little falcon that is still needing to enroll? There are just a few spots still available in our 4 year old preschool program. We have been expanding our preschool program over the last couple of years and it's really taken off! We have 3 sections of all-day 4 year old preschool. We have 1 section of 3 year old preschool as well, with a half day or full day option. Currently, our 3 year old spots are full, but contact Betsy if you would like your child to be placed on our waiting list or if you have a 4 year old wanting to enroll.

We extend a BIG FALCON THANK-YOU to G&S Construction and the Waddens for donating their labor and time to put up a new shelter at the softball field. The old picnic shelter was rotting and in disrepair. We have the BEST community members & alumni! Thank you for giving back. We know many softball and baseball fans will enjoy the new shelter during the summer of 2019.

Our 6th grade team, comprised of Becky Feldman, Sue Langstaff & Jacque Wolford (not pictured) was honored on August 1 by Governor Reynolds for their outstanding volunteer service. L-M 6th graders have many opportunities to experience volunteerism first-hand. They learn about service and are put in charge of many of our elementary's civic programs. They collect the recycling for the building, they head up the food drive, participate in "Keep Iowa Beautiful" and can be found around Louisa County various times of the year cleaning and learning about our community. GREAT JOB to our outstanding staff. There are sure to be many news updates about what these sixth graders are doing this year!

 HS Special Ed News

During the 2017-18 school year, Mrs. Lawrence's HS Special Education class opened a coffee cafe for L-M staff members. The students get real-life experience serving customers, preparing baked goods and coffee & cleaning up . The coffee cafe offers varieties of premium coffees, creamer, teas, and snacks. The students earned so much money last year that they were able to buy a new microwave for the life-skills class. Way to go!!!

On August 17th, L-M staff members went through an A.L.I.C.E training & refresher course. This is an active shooter response training that empowers our staff members to do the right thing during an unthinkable situation. Safety is a top priority of the L-M CSD, as it should be in all schools across America.

Bethany Gabe, Mark Wehrle, Brennan Gerst, Chris Parkhurst & Garren Noll were able to participate in live-shooter training. The ALICE trainers used soft pellet guns to provide a real-life assimilation.

Stacy Peterson, Theresa Putnam-Genz, Heidi Sievert, Barbara Noble, Christina Meierotto, Andi Martinez, Dottie Lawrence, Alisa Sage, Lora Earnest, Bethany Gabe & Eric Gabe take part in ALICE training in the HS cafeteria.

Our HS volleyball team (pictured above) was able to attend a "Miracle Season" event at WACO High School on August 15th. Miracle Season is a movie that just came out this year about the tragic death of an Iowa City West volleyball player and her team's ambition to band together to win a state title for her. Our girls are pictured here with author & coach, Kathy Bresnahan. This was a great team event for our girls and they also were able to scrimmage with WACO while in attendance. (NOTE: We have 28 girls out for HS volleyball this year!!! 12 of whom were on 2017-18 championship teams, either bowling or softball)

Louisa-Muscatine FFA named reserve champion team at the 2018 Iowa FFA State Nursery-Landscape Career Development Event.

The Louisa-Muscatine FFA Nursery Landscape Team received 2nd place in the Iowa FFA State Nursery-Landscape Career Development Event held at Kirkwood Community College on June 12th, 2018. Team members included Joe Browning, Cody Calvelage, and Wylie Jacobs. Joe Browning was named the top individual overall state champion and was also the top individual in plant, weed, tool, and pest identification. Cody Calvelage was named 3rd overall individual and was the 2nd place individual in plant, weed, tool, and pest identification. Individuals in the contest had to identify trees, shrubs, ground covers, perennials, and annuals along with tools, diseases, pests, and weeds from the nursery and landscape industries; they completed a general horticulture knowledge test; a landscape estimation practicum; written customer assistance; and assessed solutions to problems common in the landscape industry. The team worked hard to prepare for the contest and were able to visit with Iowa State University’s Horticulture Department, Reiman Gardens at Iowa State University, and Culver’s Garden Center & Greenhouse in Marion, IA. Congratulations to the team on their hard work and accomplishments!
